Richmond’s 64 Crayons Releases “My 65”
New Single Draws on the Powerful Tug of
Renewal from Nostalgia
Richmond, VA…. Sentiment and nostalgia make for a compelling combination. The temptation to reflect on the so-called “good old days” often has us wishing we could recapture those magical moments and pull them into the present.
Of course that’s impossible, and yet it doesn’t stop us from wishing we could relive our past with the same enthusiasm and exuberance that spurred our inspiration and imagination early on.
With their radio-ready new single “My 65,” (released January 31), Richmond Virginia’s 64 Crayons manages to encapsulate those feelings of unbridled optimism, when the world was an open road and new adventures and opportunities awaited just beyond the next horizon. The song, the first offering from a forthcoming album due for release later this year, captures the joy and delight an older couple rediscover while taking a ride in a vintage ’65 Mustang they took to the road as teenagers.
A video, filmed by Richmond’s Mad Box Made, accompanies the single. (Watch it at: https://youtu.be/t3QMdVvDf50) It juxtaposes images of the couple as they are here in the present with a fleeting glimpse of their younger selves. The song’s rocking, robust melody provides a soundtrack that underscores a sense of freedom and renewal, as well as the outpouring of energy and excitement found in recapturing a cherished youthful memento and using it to retrace uninhibited emotions.
“‘My 65’ is a song about not giving up on your dreams,” comments Marna Bales, who plays hand drums and is one of the group’s lead singers. “It’s absolutely alright to do things that bring you happiness, regardless of your age or people’s impressions or expectations of you.”
“We all share a deep love for those classic rock and pop songs where the chorus, the groove and the production really lift you up and inspire you,” says David “Sully” Sullivan, the other lead vocalist and acoustic guitar player. “Those are the songs you return to time and time again. They can often be just the right pick me up when you need it most. That’s the kind of song we’ve tried to create with ‘My 65.’ When the song’s chorus says ‘Drive’, it’s not only referring to that ‘65 Mustang, it’s also a metaphor that represents driving forward with your dreams, relationships and your best life possible.”
In a sense, that philosophy mirrors 64 Crayons’ own musical journey. The members of the group — Bales, Sullivan, and Jody Boyd (background vocals, guitars, keys, ganjo) — all had a hand in writing and producing the songs on the album. Each band member is a veteran of various successful regional bands, but formed their association with one another through Red Amp Audio, a highly respected recording studio where they have all collaborated on projects together.
“The band originally began as a creative outlet, one that allowed us to experiment with new sounds and expand in other musical directions,” Boyd said. “We’ve owned and worked at our recording studio for over a decade, and have produced music for a variety of artists, bands and advertising clients. It was time to make some music of our own.”
They got their opportunity when one of the studio’s clients asked them if they would record some songs and perform at a two day event that he held each year for his own customers and associates. Given a deadline and the incentive of financial assistance, the band opted to produce and complete several songs they had begun individually years before in addition to co-writing some new tracks. (A cover of “Kyrie” by Mr. Mister will complete the set list.) For Bales and Boyd, it offered an additional reward; the two journeyed to London’s iconic Abbey Road Studios to oversee the mastering of the album by Miles Showell, the same individual credited with remastering the Beatles catalog.
In a very real way, Bales, Sullivan, and Boyd are now experiencing that same fresh sense of enthusiasm and exhilaration that “My 65” captures so wholeheartedly. That’s no accident, The shiny red vintage Mustang featured in the video, owned by Boyd since 1990, is the reason they can imagine themselves as the people transported back through time in the video.
Boyd smiles and adds, “We should never lose that lust for life even as we grow older.”
“We are part of the ‘Perennial Generation’,” Bales declares. “By that, we mean people who are ever-blooming, relevant, creative, and collaborative, but also aren’t bound by any age, or demographic,” expands Sullivan. “With ‘My 65,’ we’re saying power to the Perennials!”
